Micro Review: Super 8

It's a rare thing in this age of mindless reboots, remakes, sequels and adaptations that an original film comes out of Hollywood. And even rarer still for it to carry the pedigree of J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg. This is writer/director Abrams's loving tribute to the escapist movies he grew up with and, as it turns out, the kind I grew up with too. Super 8 is fun, scary, exciting, moving, funny and just gruesome enough. There isn't one scene or moment that doesn't work. It's not a kids' movie, but it happens to be about kids, and because of that Super 8 will appeal to 10-year-olds and the 10-year-old inside of you. It's a rare film that should entertain anyone. A Good from The Basement for me.

Skyline: Jason's Thoughts

Nowhere near the train wreck many say it is, but not quite the fun ride as Anthony Michael Bosa and Shawn believe it to be. Still, there's lots to like in The Brothers Stause's alien invasion flick, including some crazy alien creatures and a number of great special effects/action sequences. In fact, the film's only real flaw is a cast of characters I wanted to see die rather than survive and an ending that doesn't quite work. Still, this is a decent B-movie that entertains despite its flaws. I doubt I will watch it again, so it rates a Bad from me. Sorry dudes.

Guest Review: Skyline

We've heard a lot of bad buzz about this movie since it's release, but now that Anthony Michael Bosa has weighed in, we may give it a watch. And thanks to him for taking one for the team. Merry Christmas dood!

One word. Awesome. Yes, it has it's one flaw: too much drama between the characters. On the flip side, awesome effects, good action, incredibly awesome enemies and, of course, the Army that tries as usual. GO MARINES! I can see why most people would not like this film. They expect too much nowadays, or, they really just don't appreciate awesome. THIS IS A FUN MOVIE PEOPLE!!! They are not going for Oscars, just entertainment! Plenty of that. The heroes, or cast as I will call them, are always on the run from something cool. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. Look out! Big bad guy! (That rhymes!) If you like sci-fi,or enjoy action, this has both. I was excited to see this film and it did not disappoint me. It had a different ending which I thought was mega cool. Am I hope for a sequel? Hell Ya! Am I a movie geek? Hell Ya! Keep an open mind, have a beer, watch this movie.A Good review from Anthony Michael Bosa.

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo front-runner for Alien prequel

Noomi Rapace is the front-runner for the Alien prequel. That's the news.

Meetings between Ridley Scott, who directed the original film more than 30 years ago, and a number of potential leads have concluded and the lean Rapace is so far his favourite, so says Deadline.

Other actresses that reportedly took meetings with Scott were Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, Natalie Portman, and Olivia Wilde of the upcoming Tron Legacy. Deadline also states the studio is heavily involved in this particular casting and Rapace's English, or lack thereof, may be the only problem.

As far as I am concerned, Rapace is a great choice.  Her Lisbeth Salender was a major ball breaker. Get her to work on the accent and let's roll. Actually, who cares about the accent. She's a worthy successor to Ripley, even though the film takes place before Sigourney Weaver and company came along.

All I've got to do now is a give two shits about another Alien moving being made.

Second Skyline trailer hits . . . looks fantastic!

A month or so ago we showed you the first trailer for Skyline, an alien invasion flick made on a budget that impressed despite the limited info presented. Now the second trailer has arrived and it kicked Jason's ass. We're sure, when Shawn sees it, his ass will be kicked too!

Gaze in wild wonder at the preview below, and leave a comment or two if so inclined! Skyline touches down in theatres in November.

Trailer Alert: Skyline

Between this teaser and the trailer for Monsters it looks like genre film making is in good hands.

The Strause Brothers, who made the R-rated Aliens vs. Predator movie and also run the top level special effects house Hydraulx, have self-financed a large-scale sci-fi movie and shot it with their own cameras at their own home studio.  It is called Skyline and the very short trailer shows a lot of promise.

The teaser doesn't really offer much from the movie itself except for a few cool shots of the alien ships sucking lots of people into the air, but it does build some tension. And it looks slick.

The film opens Nov. 12.
