A Few Bits About Dan and Equus

A great review of Equus done by none other than STEPHEN FRY (Contact Music UK )

FRY: 'RADCLIFFE'S PERFORMANCE IS MORE THAN NUDITY'

English actor/screenwriter STEPHEN FRY has urged London theatregoers to focus on DANIEL RADCLIFFE's acting and not his naked body when they watch him onstage in EQUUS.
The 17-year-old HARRY POTTER star has attracted headlines for his controversial role at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End.
But Fry wishes audiences would concentrate on Radcliffe delivering an "amazing performance".
He says, "It's not just about the nudity.
"Yes, of course some people are going to say there's Harry Potter naked, smoking, saying f**k and simulating an orgasm - but let's not let that detract from an amazing performance, which is what he delivered.
"He was marvellous. He's got guts, I will say that.

Moving the Magic
‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe recasts himself—complete with nude scene—on the London stage. The critics are impressed.

On stage in London's West End and stripped of his cinematic magic (and for a while his clothes), Daniel Radcliffe of “Harry Potter” fame proves he’s no-one trick pony. Last night’s much-anticipated revival of Peter Shaffer’s “Equus” showed off a darker, more mature Radcliffe...

“Equus” is a clear and daring departure from Radcliffe’s interpretation of Harry Potter, the orphaned young wizard who fights the dark arts in J. K. Rowling’s blockbuster series. The teen actor we see on stage is provocative, intelligent, even controversial in the play's famous nude scene.

The high-profile cast, directed by the 30-year-old Thea Sharrock, does not eclipse the force of Schaffer’s script. Rather, the actors bring the playwright’s powerful social critique to life for a new generation of theatergoers...

The critics agreed, even if the headline writers couldn’t help drenching their reviews in “Harry Potter” references: BRILLIANT RADCLIFFE THROWS OFF HARRY POTTER'S CLOAK wrote the Daily Telegraph, while the Guardian enthused NO POTTER HORSEPLAY FROM RADCLIFFE, JUST FINE ACTING.

From Hello Magazine

Daniel is aiming to leave his child star image behind by playing troubled stable hand Alan Strang in the psychological thriller. And with theatre critics climbing over each other to heap praise on the young thesp, he seems to have proved his mettle as a serious dramatic actor.

Many of the UK's most celebrated stars of stage and screen had gone along to the Gielgud Theatre for Wednesday night's performance. British favourites like Samantha Morton, Helena Bonham-Carter and Cilla Black were joined by Tinseltown heart-throb Christian Slater and chat show host Graham Norton for the hotly anticipated event.

From the The Sun

A funny quote by none other than Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter, who appears to have been impressed by Daniel’s flashing in new play Equus.

"Speaking on London’s LBC radio, she gushed: 'Daniel’s got such balls . . . I mean, he really does. Metaphorically in every way. I just so admire him.

" 'And also I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’ve never seen his eyes because of the famous Harry Potter glasses — you take them off and he has got exactly what they describe in the play, amazing eyes and amazing stare, he’s got a great intensity . . . good on him for doing it.' "

From the Daily Mail

And finally even though this is a very immature article, it is quite interesting to read the reaction of some wild fans in it’s all, there are going to be fans that will go to watch Dan in Equus for one thing only!!…this article has quotes from a few fans, none fans and ....well here are some quotes.... remember this is as immature as it can gets but it is also good to read from the other side of the spectrum!

We all know what's coming. Throats are cleared, programmes closed, bottoms adjusted and binoculars fought over. And, finally, at exactly 9.30pm and after weeks of feverish anticipation, Harry Potter (a.k.a. Daniel Radcliffe) takes off his clothes -every last pant and sock - and drops them in an untidy pile on the floor before us.

"Oh my goodness..." I squeak. "He's quite something."

"Isn't he just?" whispers the woman next to me out of the corner of her mouth. "And surprisingly hirsute, if I might say...crikey, just look at that six-pack. And chest. And tummy...Wow! Who'd have thought it?"

It's all enough to make Harry's female sidekick, Hermione Granger feel giddy. And it's surely a bit much for the hundreds of loyal Potter fans who have been stationed outside the theatre all week for a glimpse of their hero.

For days, they've been mobbing the stage door, clutching dogeared cards, red roses, "I love you Daniel" banners and Harry Potter merchandise for their hero to sign.

On premiere night, Sisters Donata and Alesandra Meduir, 17 and 20, from Rome, were among the stage-door groupies. They have taken a week off college to wait in the rain to see Radcliffe leaving the theatre each night.

"Saturday was the best, but last night he was lovely," trills Donata. "He signed autographs and winked at us. I've always loved him. Tonight we're hoping for a cuddle."

"I grew up with the Harry Potter books and I love the films," chips in Alesandra. "But I'm ready to see a bit more of him now, if you know what I mean."

Just as Harry Potter has grown up, so have his fans. Pottermania has been growing greater with each new book and film.

Some 6,000 fans crowded outside New York's Radio City Music Hall for the 2004 unveiling of The Prisoner Of Azkaban movie, the third of Harry's big screen appearances. The following year, fans hurled underwear, tried to climb into Radcliffe's limo and held up banners: "Mrs Radcliffe is here". Another girl even rocked up uninvited in Radliffe's hotel suite, draped only in a towel.

It goes without saying that Radcliffe can act, but he also has an amazing body. And when the big moment comes, there's no messing about with silhouettes or carefully-arranged furniture to spare any blushes.

Back outside at the stage door after nearly five hours' waiting and occasionally chanting "Daniel, Daniel, Daniel", Donata et al. are finally rewarded. Not, sadly, by a cuddle, but by a glimpse of Daniel sitting, cap on, head down, in the back of his chauffered car.

"We love you, Daniel," they shriek. "We love you!" And then the girls stick out their tongues and run them down the tinted window of his car, leaving a smear of saliva.

Whey-faced and exhausted, the object of their adoration stares down at his lap.
