We in The Basement love us our underground cinema. And no genre of underground cinema turns our collective cranks like horror does. Hatchet. Behind the Mask. Session 9. Trick r Treat. The Loved Ones. Dog Soldiers. Gems all!
And along comes Absentia, a creepy looking flick earning vast praise on the festival circuit. And, judging from the trailer below, it looks like a winner . . . at least as far as previews go.
The story is as follows: “Tricia’s husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him “dead in absentia.” As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house. As she begins to link it to other mysterious disappearances, it becomes clear that his presumed death might be anything but “natural.”
No word yet on when or if this will hit a wide release, but you know we'll be reviewing it down the pipe. We'll keep you posted, as always. Check out the official site for more on Absentia.

OK, if Shawn and I weren't so damn dedicated to our fine radio show we'd probably be sitting in a movie theatre tomorrow night giving James Wan's Insidious a whirl. Why, you ask? Just check out the TV spot below and gain some understanding.
"The scariest movie in decades" critics say. Wow! And boy does it look it. I like me my ghost stories and this looks to deliver the good. Hopefully we won't be as sucker punched by the trailers for Insidious as the wife and I were sucker punched by the trailer for Sucker Punch!
The film, which was written by Wan's Saw collaborator Leigh Whannell, hits theatres tomorrow. It stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne in a story about a mother and father fighting to protect their child from a supernatural force.

A lean, mean scare machine that lacks some of the punch of the original film but still delivers the goods. This is actually a prequel to Paranormal Activity, and it does a fine job of blending the events in this film with those of its predecessor. Audiences are treated to one of the best jump scares in movie history, the creation of a solid mythology for what is obviously an ongoing series, and Katie Featherston's tremendous rack. And yes, it's pretty darn scary at times. A Good review from this Basement dweller.

The boys over at Arrow In the Head and Bloody Disgusting report that Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia) and Michael R. Perry are on board to write the third installment in the Paranormal Activity series.
Perry is credited with the script for PA2, which Shawn and I have yet to see as catching the new releases right away isn't our gig. But we're big fans of the original and I enjoyed Disturbia. As for the plot of PA3? No damn idea. Paramount Pictures is keeping story details under lock and key pending the film's release Oct. 21.
I don't know if I care about a third movie. Paranormal Activity never struck me as a franchise but, if they make money, then Hollywood is going to beat the idea to death.
Oren Peli, who directed the original, is back as a producer.

Tonight is a Basement first! With the help of psychic and frequent contributor Mike S., and the marvels of modern Facebook technology, Shawn and I are going to conduct a live online and onair interview with the spirit of famous Hollywood film director, producer and actor William Castle!
We've opened a discussion on our Facebook page and, shortly after 10 p.m., our conversation from beyond the grave will begin! Remember, Castle is a ghost, so he's only regained the ability to type, not to speak. Mike S. will speak for him!
Those who want to listen can tune in live at 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops or www.thex.ca. If you want to watch the discussion unfold, or even have a question to ask, stop by our Facebook page.
Castle may be best known for his gimmicks. For example, The Tingler (1959) was about a docile creature that lives in the spinal cord, is activated by fright, and can only be destroyed by screaming. In the film's finale, one of the creatures removed from the spine of a mute woman is let loose in a movie theatre. Some seats in theatres showing the Tingler were equipped with larger versions of hand-held joy buzzers that were attached to the underside of the seats. When the Tingler in the film attacked the audience, the buzzers were activated as a voice encouraged the real audience to scream for their lives.
We've also got music by Rob Zombie and Sick Puppies, plus featured discussions on the best underrated horror films of all time. Stick with us!
And remember, if all of this makes your skin crawl, it's Halloween: everyone is entitled to one good scare!
Below is Castle introducing his film The Tingler.

While Shawn and I are rockin' it on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops Friday night several horror fans will likely be heading to local theatres to check out the sequel to last year's hit Paranormal Activity.
We here in The Basement, including Shawn, myself and contributor Mike S, loved the shit out of P.A. and none of us can deny that it looks like a noble effort was undertaken to make a decent sequel in Paranormal Activity 2.
Below is the Scream Awards trailer for the film, which has a kicker of a final few seconds. I admit I am eager to see the film, and may even venture into theatres at some point.
Paranormal Activity 2 is directed by Tod Williams with a story by Michael R. Perry and screenplay by Michael R. Perry and Christopher Landon. The film is produced by Jason Blumand and Oren Peli, who wrote and directed the first film to perfection.

I usually shy away from updating the blog on Saturdays but, seeing as I've been away for a few days, why the F not!?!
Below is the exclusive poster for Paranormal Activity 2, which is playing a nasty game on fans of the original. Audiences get a clue here to what the follow up to the surprise horror hit is all about, a hint there, but no one really knows what the story is.
Will Katie be back? Is that dark shape in the doorway, seen in the film's teaser, her or someone entirely different? Is it another woman possessed by the same demon?
In the poster below we see a mirror with no reflection of the baby in the cradle, and a light cracking through an opening door. An angry dog. That's it. But the image does continue the theme started with the poster of the first movie.
I, for one, hope the movie is great. Shawn does too. Paranormal Activity was a great, spooky surprise, and we here in The Basement hope the sequel isn't another Blair Witch 2!

Remember Wes Craven? The guy who created the original A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes and The Last House On the Left? How about Scream?
Well, he's back.
My Soul To Take features an overused plot about a serial killer coming back from the dead. There's a lot of expository dialogue, and everything feels a bit flat.Granted, but it's Craven so there will be a couple of good scares. And the imagery is nice. We'll know more once the film opens in October.
In 3D you say? Well, maybe we'll rent it instead.
Check out the trailer and judge for yourself.
Listener's Review: The Woman In Black
The following comes from FRFTB fan Mike S, who Constant Listeners know is the creator of our Good, Bad and Ugly rating system. Here he takes a few moments to share his thoughts on the British horror film The Woman In Black, based on one of the longest running stage plays in London!
Very few people can make a decent ghost movie. The British are one of the few. When I watched this movie, I had trouble sleeping afterwards... for several nights. The setting of the mansion that becomes rather isolated when the fog roles in created such a sense of being utterly alone and unprotected... especially when you start to hear the phantom sounds of a horse drawn carriage in the fog, and the screams of a child. Adding into that, the appearance of a hateful looking woman in black on an island nobody is supposed to be able to reach due to the fog is enough to make you uncomfortable... and jumpy at the little sounds in your house when you're alone. The pace isn't fast- but it's relentless. Once the story has you in its icy cold death grip, there is no letting go, and you're compelled to keep watching to the end. Definitely one of the best ghost films out there... and one to watch with the lights on... or off if you're really brave... A Good rating from this Basement fan.

Not Much Activity in Paranormal Activity 2 Teaser
We're a bit late in getting this up on the blog, but we did post a link earlier today on the Facebook page with this teaser for Paranormal Activity 2.
I loved the hell out of Paranormal Activity, and this preview shows more of the same, only with a dog and baby in on the action. There is no need for a sequel, but I do hold out hope that the follow up adds to the mythology and doesn't just rehash what we've seen before.
Check out the trailer below and share your thoughts, feelings and concerns.
