Next on the chopping block: Cropsey and Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus

Ladies and gentlemen, after a three-week absence, The Basement is reopen! And what better way to celebrate than by watching the much anticipated sequel to a Basement favourite: Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus?

Shawn, Anthony Michael Bosa and I make no bones about our love for The Asylum's cheesy low-budget monster mashup. So, when the studio announced a sequel was in the works, we got real excited. When that sequel was named Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus, we fell out of our chairs. Does it matter that crocosaurus isn't even a word? No! It's all about watching monsters smash stuff and try to eat each other.

Tonight we'll let our awesome and sexy listeners know what we thought about this potentially awesome film. And Anthony Michael Bosa has demanded that he be in The Basement Studio at The X just for the occaision.

And yes, that's Urkel himself, Jaleel White, in the above picture.

Our second film of the evening is the polar opposite to Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus. Cropsey is a documentary about an urban legend that haunted filmmakers Barbara Brancaccio and Joshua Zeman while they grew up in Staten Island, NY. In the film, Brancaccio and Zeman return to their childhood home to investigate the myth about the elusive boogeyman who allegedly lived in the abandoned ruins of the notorious Willowbrook Mental Institution, which he used as a base for abducting and killing local children.

Sounds like it could be heavy and creepy stuff, but we haven't had great luck with documentaries in The Basement. Is Cropsey another Restrepo or more on par with Blood Into Wine? Tune in tonight!

We've also got the latest movie news, a bunch of music for your ear hole and a few other surprises up our sleeves. And there's Anthony Michael Bosa. Admit it, you're as excited to tune in to 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops or head online to www.thex.ca at 10 p.m. PST as we are to be back on the air.

Jason and Shawn review: Blood Into Wine and Splice

Blood Into Wine

Jason: Never before has a movie left me feeling so conflicted. On the one hand, I don't think there's enough material here to support a feature-length documentary. But some moments worked so well that I couldn't help but feel completely entertained and moved. Maynard James Keenan is a great screen presence and some of his journey as a winemaker is very interesting. But one can't help but feel that this is nothing more than an extended ad for his wine, or even a bit of a con job. Watch for yourself and decide. A Bad rating from me.

Shawn: Viticulture. Exciting! (sarcasm). I like my red wine. I like Tool. Loud! So when lead singer Maynard James Keenan decides to make wine, I think that sounds cool. But is it worth a feature-length documentary? Not so much. The entire thing comes across as a way to sell more of Keenan's wine in the wake of free music downloads. That way he can still be weird and make money. There are some funny moments, but Blood Into Wine rates an Ugly for me.

Splice

Jason: The first movie ever made that asks the question "what would it be like to have sex with a genetic mutation?" Sadly, Splice carried a lot of advance hype as the next great horror/sci-fi outing and cannot live up to. It's good, and well made and acted, but it's not the next big thing. Instead we've got a solid, extended episode of  The Outer Limits and nothing more. It's worth a watch, but I doubt I'd ever see it again. Another Bad from this Basement Dweller.

Shawn: Genetic research? Splicing DNA? Creating a new species? How many times has this movie been made? But the formula still works. Splice evoked feelings that are best described as uncomfortably reasonable. There was a lot of seat squirming going on here due to moments of questionable morality. It created a lot of different emotions in me, and I really dug that. Few movies can pull that off. That's why it rates a Good, but I do feel dirty.

Next on the chopping block: the Leah Cairns interview, Blood Into Wine and Splice

It's going to be a night of all talk and no rock in The Basement as we present our long-touted interview with actress Leah Cairns!

Leah grew up in Kamloops before embarking on an eight-year backpacking adventure that eventually led her to a career in acting. She's had a starring role in the Canadian TV series Godiva's and appeared on the Chris Isaak Show, Kyle XY and Supernatural. But Leah is probably best know as Margaret "Racetrack" Edmondson on the hit series Battlestar: Galactica and as Al Pacino's love interest in the film 88 Minutes.

Our chat with Leah will take up most of tonight's episode, and we promise it'll be a lot of fun. But don't fear: there's always room in The Basement for reviews and we've got our biased opinions on the documentary Blood Into Wine and the Canadian sci-fi/horror flick Splice starring Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody.

So turn up that dial tonight at 10 p.m. on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops or listen live at www.thex.ca. Shawn and I guarantee a good time will be had by all.
